I letter. I draw. I eat a great ton of chocolate, pizza, and ice cream.
I spend my day working as a print producer at Coach, by night I create for Bawa Studios with a focus on largely human centric projects.
Before I began calling it Bawa Studios, calligraphy and lettering started as a passionate hobby. It began in kindergarten when my older sister taught me how to write my name in cursive followed by countless envelopes signed "congratulations" for all the family and friends' special occasions. Soon enough, after being paid to write, I realized this was my calling.
This is what I was meant to do.
As a kid I thought I wanted to be a pediatrician, until I realized how squeamish I was at the sight of a non-clean cut. Later on, I thought I wanted to go into some kind of science research field but after participating in local county science fairs I switched to business marketing. After the newfound freedom of college and flunking business school my first year, I settled for Journalism with a focus on visual storytelling. Somehow in the years of not knowing what I wanted to do, I learned to mesh all the things I did want to do with calligraphy, lettering, and design.
You see, I suck at words. I tell stories backwards. I like to read the last page in the book before I even start, because if I'm intrigued, I’ll definitely keep reading. The only way I know how to express myself is by fine tuning every brushstroke and every curve and pixel. And making words look like they can feel. And so, lettering became an obsession and stress reliever while working at a startup ad agency and then joining that corporate 9 to 5 life.Soon enough, I realized there is so much good you can do with lettering and design. Growing up as a first generation South Asian American, I've always felt the need to give back to local communities. This past year, I've been focusing on how to use my platform to amplify the unheard voices.
My journey has only begun and I can't wait to share my process and thoughts and learn so much along the way with you.
